DON'T BE FOOLED BY HDR NIT RATINGS!!!

Nits, a measure of screen brightness, are crucial for outdoor TV viewing because they determine how well you can see the screen in the outdoors. Higher nit values mean a brighter display, which is essential to counteract outdoor ambient light, the sun's glare, and ensure a clear, vibrant picture even in direct sunlight.

SkyVue NXG and OBX TV's are called the World's Best. SkyVue has earned this reputation by offering the brightest outdoor TV's in the marketplace.

It's common for an HDR TV's nit brightness rating to be inflated by 65% or more when compared to a NON-HDR TV.

HDR brightness nit ratings are misleading, as they are solely based on the peak brightness in a very small area of the screen.

This makes a HDR TV appear brighter on paper than it actually is in real life, which is a real problem outdoors.

Think of this analogy - A powerful flashlight can illuminate a small area very brightly, but it doesn't illuminate the entire room. Outdoor TV's need to combat ambient light, sunlight, and glare, requiring high and constant brightness across the entire screen, not just in isolated spots.

The HDR nit rating system, especially when applied to outdoor TV's, is used for marketing purposes to inflate perceived brightness without accurately reflecting the TV's overall performance in real-world outdoor viewing conditions.

Unlike indoor TVS, Brightness is 10X more important than anything else for outdoor TV entertainment, and this includes 4k!

  • Don't be misguided, this statement is true even in shaded, partial sun, and full sun venues. A customer looking to purchase an outdoor TV needs to spend all they can afford on more brightness.
  • A great outdoor TV needs to produce 2,000-3,000 TRUE NIT brightness across the entire viewing area at one time in shade, partial shade, or full sun applications.
  • Unfortunately for the outdoor TV customer, HDR was introduced in the last few years. This gave the TV industry marketing departments a path to dramatically inflate advertised NIT brightness levels. What was historically a full screen 600 NIT brightness Non HDR TV, was magically advertised as a 1,000 NIT Brightness HDR TV in a very small area of the screen.
  • How could the TV manufactures advertise these inflated NIT brightness levels?
  • Before HDR- TVs were always simply rated by their capability in producing NIT brightness across the entire screen all at the same time.
  • After HDR- all HDR TV's were rated by their capability to produce a certain NIT brightness level on just a "small area" of the entire viewing area at one time, by robbing NIT brightness away from the rest of your viewing area. Classic "Rob Peter to pay Paul".
  • This is why you can not compare any HDR TV NIT rating to a NON HDR TV NIT rating. Its common that a HDR TV's NIT brightness ratings are overrated 65%+

DON'T BE MISLED BY HDR NIT RATINGS!!!

BEWARE OF HDR TV's INFLATED NIT BRIGHTNESS RATINGS

Over the last several years, the consumer electronics market has seen the introduction of HDR or High Dynamic Range. Figuratively speaking, HDR effectively divides the picture into 50-100+ viewing squares.

HDR steals brightness from one square and takes this brightness to another square. No surprise, the entire HDR TV industry saw HDR as an opportunity to change the way they advertised TV brightness.

Before HDR, all TV screens were rated on their ability to produce a sustained level of nit brightness across the TV at the same time. For example - a 2,000 nit Non HDR TV will produce a sustained brightness level of 2,000 nit across the screen at the same time. NON HDR TV's are still rated this way today.

All HDR TV screens are rated on their ability to produce a maximum brightness level only on just a limited amount of squares at the same time.

As an example: a major tv brand advertises a 2,000 nit HDR brightness outdoor tv. It was tested by a third party, and test results showed it only produced a maximum of 1197 nits across the screen at the same time. This is 803 nits less or 40% less than a NON HDR TV brightness rating.

Since nit brightness is 10X more important to outdoor TV viewing than 4K or HDR, this recent change in how nit ratings are advertised is very important to understand before making a purchase.
